Service Description
Paper mache is one of the most versatile art forms used today in Mexico. Artists create piñatas, life-size figures, masks, alebrijes, and much more. The art of paper mache has been perfected by many Mexican artists and is truly one of the most enjoyable mediums to work with—sure, it can be messy, but it’s so much fun! In this workshop, we will explore a bit of the history of paper mache and its significance in our beautiful culture. Participants will be guided in planning, sketching, and constructing a paper mache mask. You will learn to create a wearable or decorative mask inspired by various sources provided. We will focus on making a mask that is both functional and fun! This is a 2-day workshop, with each day lasting 3 hours, as the paper mache needs to fully dry before it can be painted. On Day 1, participants will learn to plan, sketch, cut, measure, and construct a mask using cardboard, tape, wire, and plenty of paper and glue. On Day 2, participants will have the opportunity to paint and decorate their masks according to their personal preferences, taking home a unique, one-of-a-kind piece that is rich in culture and history!
